How Many O2 Sensors Does Your Car Have? (By Engine Type and Model)

Updated 16 April 2026

Most cars have 2 or 4 oxygen sensors. The number depends on your engine layout. Find your vehicle below.

By Engine Configuration

2

Inline 4-Cylinder

One upstream sensor before the cat, one downstream after. This is the most common layout on small to midsize cars.

Examples: Civic, Corolla, Elantra, Altima, CR-V

4

V6/V8, Dual Exhaust

Two banks of cylinders, each with its own catalytic converter. Bank 1 and Bank 2 each get one upstream and one downstream sensor.

Examples: F-150 V6/V8, Silverado, Grand Cherokee, Camry V6

2-3

V6, Y-Pipe Single Exhaust

Some V6 engines merge both banks into a single pipe before the cat, giving them 2 sensors. Others use 2 upstream + 1 downstream.

Examples: Some older Accord V6, Altima V6

How to Find Out for Your Specific Car

1. OBD-II Scan

Connect a scan tool and check which sensor PIDs are available. If you see B1S1, B1S2, B2S1, B2S2, you have 4 sensors. If only B1S1 and B1S2, you have 2.

2. Count Exhaust Pipes

Look under the car from behind. One tailpipe typically means 2 sensors. Dual pipes (or a Y-split visible under the car) typically means 4.

3. Parts Lookup

Search your year/make/model on RockAuto.com or AutoZone.com. The parts listing will show every sensor available for your specific vehicle with position labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many O2 sensors does my car have?

4-cylinder cars typically have 2 sensors. V6/V8 with dual exhaust have 4. Some V6 engines with a Y-pipe have 2-3. Check the lookup table above or scan your OBD system.

What is the difference between Sensor 1 and Sensor 2?

Sensor 1 is always upstream (before the catalytic converter). Sensor 2 is always downstream (after the cat). This is universal across all makes and models.

Do all cars have O2 sensors?

All gasoline and diesel vehicles sold in the US since 1996 have at least 2. Electric vehicles have none. Hybrids have the same setup as their gasoline equivalents.

How do I find out exactly how many my car has?

Scan with an OBD reader to see which PIDs are available, count exhaust pipes, or look up your vehicle on RockAuto which lists every sensor for your specific model.
